The activities that an international student can partake in are limited to study and research. Those international students who are interested in working part-time or undertaking any sort of activity that brings in an income, are required to obtain permission in the form of an official work permit. If a student works a part-time job without this permit, both the student and the employer will be penalized. Your permit is valid until the end of your period of residency. You can apply for the permit again at the same time that you extend your residency period. For further information, ask the International Student Support Office or your faculty or graduate school. Please stay informed and be sure of the legality of your employment. There have been cases of students not realizing that they were breaking the law. Increasing numbers of international students have been arrested on for possessing other people’s goods that they did not order, or for withdrawing money from another person`s bank account. These illegal organizations make themselves sound nice, but should be carefully avoided.
Under the College Student resident status, you cannot do part-time work during a leave of absence from school, regardless of whether you have been granted permission to engage in activity other than that permitted by the status of residence.
You do not need permission to engage in activity other than that permitted by the status of residence to receive payment from the university for education/research assistance.
