Courtesy Visit from Northern Arizona University, in the United States
On Wednesday, November 29, 2023, Ms. Melinda Marquardt, Senior Coordinator from Northern Arizona University, a partner institution of Yamaguchi University, conducted a two-day visit to our campus. The agenda included a courtesy meeting with Professor Ishi, the Vice President for International Affairs, discussions with relevant faculties, and observations of Japanese language classes. On the same afternoon, meetings were convened at the Faculty of Engineering, encompassing sessions with the International Exchange Support Committee and the Engineering Education Research Center.
During the meeting with the International Exchange Support Office, representatives from the Faculty of Engineering, including the Director of the International Exchange Support Office, Professor Kei Kawamura from the Department of Information Science and Engineering, Associate Professor Arnaud Macadre from the Department of Mechanical Engineering, Associate Professor Md. Azizul Moqsud from the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, Professor Ryuichi Komatsu from the Department of Applied Chemistry, Professor Hidekazu Murata from the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering, Assistant Professor Yota Kurokawa from the Department of Information Science and Engineering, Professor Kazuhiko Yamada from the Department of Architectural Design and Engineering, the Director of the General Affairs and Planning Division, Ms. Kyoko Ishida, the Director of the Academic Affairs Division, Ms. Yasuko Fujita, and the Chief of the General Affairs and Planning Section, Ms. Ai Matsunaga attended. Following the welcome address by Director Kawamura, Ms. Marquardt extended greetings and provided an overview of Northern Arizona University. Subsequently, faculty members from the Faculty of Engineering delivered overviews of their respective departments and discussed potential collaborations for future student exchanges. Our faculty members inquired about the Japanese language proficiency of students from Northern Arizona University and the expectations that our university has for them during their stay.
After the meeting with the International Exchange Support Office, discussions continued with the Engineering Education Research Center. The Director of the Overseas Dispatch Support Office, Associate Professor Hirotoshi Mori from the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, and Staff of the Overseas Dispatch Support Office (Chief, Technical Management Division, Advanced Technology Institute), Ms. Chisa Yamada, actively participated in discussions focused on collaboration in language training.
The partnership with Northern Arizona University was established through coordination led by Ms. Matsunaga, dispatched to Kent State University in the United States for the Long-term Educational Administrators Program for International Exchange in 2021. The inaugural cohort of exchange students has recently been dispatched.
This visit offered the representative from Northern Arizona University an opportunity to deepen the understanding of Yamaguchi University and provided a valuable chance to explore possibilities for researchers and student exchanges. Aligned with the goals outlined in “Yamaguchi University Vision 2030” to cultivate a diverse campus, we are dedicated to continuous discussions to enhance our collaboration with Northern Arizona University.
