Yamaguchi University can trace its history back to 1815, when Ueda Hoyo, a feudal clansman of the Choshu Province, founded a private school called Yamaguchi Kodo. The school grew and adapted with the modernizing academic systems, and in 1949 was restructured to become a national university. With the goal of spreading peace and prosperity through its role as a center for learning and research in the region, Yamaguchi University has continued to evolve. When all national universities were incorporated in 2004, it became the National University Corporation, Yamaguchi University.

As we embark on the process of creating new era for the university, we hereby establish “The Charter of Yamaguchi University” in hopes

that students, faculty, and staff can unite in sharing the same ideals and achieve our goals.

We will encourage all to learn about the current issues of the 21st century, develop ways of thinking, and put their plans into action, by

providing a space where learning and wisdom is valued.

We hope to develop knowledge by continuously evaluating our own roles and accomplishments.

We will work together, sharing what we learn and the joy we find in learning. We will cultivate a sense of cooperation in all fields as the

“Yamaguchi University Spirit.”

We will eliminate prejudice and discrimination, honoring justice, equality and fraternity through the spirit of thoughtfulness and self-discipline.

We will act as the core comprehensive university of the region, to embrace the diverse specialties of each faculty and graduate school

and provide an education that allows students to grow into highly individual, specialized and socially conscious members of society.

We will aid students as they strive for personal development and improvement while advancing their ability for self-management.

We will provide our students with the ability to explore and address the problems that arise in the knowledge society of the 21st century,

in order to contribute to the spread of peace and further development in the local and international community.

We will emphasize the importance of all research, from basic and scientific research to research that targets solutions to societal

problems. Using our abilities as a comprehensive university, we will remain committed to cutting-edge and forward-looking research and

putting our results to use to give back to the community.

We will respect the uniqueness of the humanities, social sciences, natural sciences, life sciences, and other academic fields, and establish

an interdisciplinary research system suited to the 21st century, through collaboration among these disciplines.

We will build a system for joint research, facilitating the exchange of researchers within and without the university. We will fulfill our

responsibilities to remain accountable and share the research process and results widely throughout the community.

We will strive to add value to the world, creating harmony within humankind, and between humans, nature, and science.

We recognize that while the 20th century has brought us great prosperity, it has also brought global issues such as destruction of the

environment, poverty, hunger and wars. Understanding the past, we will use our wisdom and courage to solve these problems in the

21st century.

We will be a forum for academic and cultural enrichment, cultivating the specialized skills and knowledge necessary to contribute to the

development of the local community, promote international peace, and further the well-being of humankind.
